Challenges Faced by the Barangay Health Workers in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental
Published in October 2026 (Vol 1, Issue 1, 2026)
Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) play a vital role in delivering primary healthcare services in Philippine communities. However, they encounter various challenges that affect their ability to provide quality health services. This study explored the lived experiences of Barangay Health Workers in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental. A qualitative phenomenological research design was employed involving forty-five (45) purposively selected BHWs with at least six months of service. Data were collected through validated face-to-face interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's thematic analysis. The findings revealed four major challenges: lack of medical support and supplies, insufficient training and professional development, financial constraints due to delayed and inadequate honoraria, and inadequate health center facilities. Participants coped by seeking assistance from municipal health offices, collaborating with colleagues and community leaders, demonstrating resourcefulness, and drawing motivation from community appreciation, family support, and their commitment to public service. They also recommended stronger government support through timely and adequate compensation, continuous training, improved medical supplies and facilities, logistical assistance, and greater recognition of their contributions. The study concludes that despite significant operational, financial, and institutional challenges, Barangay Health Workers remain committed to serving their communities. Strengthening government support and investing in sustainable workforce development are essential to improve their well-being, motivation, and effectiveness in delivering quality primary healthcare services.
